I am having problems in my left foot. What happens is as I approach
2 hours of running, I have incredible pain which starts in the ball of my
foot and radiates into the toe next to the great toe. I currently want to
run another marathon, though 1/2's are the longest I can run. I have heard
of "morton's neuroma". My fears are wondering , honestly, can I keep
running? And what exists to heal this?
Adam it sounds like you have a Mortons Neuroma. This is abundle of nerves that exists between the first and second metatarsal - the long bones of the forefoot, which can get upset and inflammed if you have a longer second toe than first - a Mortns toe. Also, if your transverse arch - the arch across the forefoot - is decreased, the mortons neuroma can become further inflammed. The key is a metatarsal pad on your orthotic - or even one without. (An orthotic is a critical tool to assist your biomechanics. You probably have a larger problem, like an uncompensated forefoot varus). But either way - use a met pad ASAP!
