Neil, Hi! In July I had surgery and the surgeon removed my piriformis
muscle on my left side. This was a last resort after years of pain and
a multitude of PT, shots, tens, etc. I still have some swelling and
soreness but I am anxious to start some stretches, etc. Any
WOW!!! I have so many questions - the key to recovery after surgery is to progress gradually. The Piriformis is a hip external rotator, so now you have to train other muscles to work like that. The plae of function is primarily the transverse plane, so you will have to work mostly in that plane. My best suggestion for early functional rehab is a slide board - each time you change direction, you have to decelerate the transverse plane with your glut/butt complex...from there, roller blades, and from there...perhaps running on grass...please keep me updated of your progress. Good luck.
