I alternate walking, running and aerobic exercise as part of my fitness
plan. I wake up with extremely painful leg cramps. I have on occasion took
ibuprofen before going to bed to help reduce the pain. I am leery of taking
medication on a frequent basis. I had a bad reaction a few years ago when I
took a herbal medication. I really try to warm up and train well. What can
I do to alleviate these cramps? I have been active on a regular basis for
the past five years. Thanks for your response.
My first thought with respectto leg cramps relates to your nutrition. Specifically, are you calcium deficient, or are you potassium deficient? Second, I wonder about your hydration. Are you getting enough water, and specifically, enough electrolytes? Try drinking twice as much water as you are now, and try eating an extra bananna each day. Also, take extra calcium - (chelated) - and see how you feel. I hope this helps.
