I often get severe stomach cramping when I run....usually the severity
depends on the length of the run. The cramps aren't so bad when I am
running but it seems to worsen when I stop and I have to have a bowel
movement right away (sometimes this happens during the run as well.) After
a long run (10 + miles), I will even have diarrhea/upset stomach for the
entire day. I usually try to go to the bathroom before I run but this
doesn't seem to help. I drink a lot of water but no coffee or fruit juices.
This certainly is an inconvenience for me but is it something I should be
Thanks so much!
Any imparement to the forward flow of the intenstinal contents, whether by partial or complete stoppage or by reversal of flow, is known as an intestinal obstruction. It can be caused by mechanical, vascular or nervous disorders. Kim, you might - in the very worst case- have some kind of a intestinal obstruction. I believe that the symptoms for this would be worse than you experience now, and also prevelant when you are not running. With the onset of an obstruction, fluids and air would gather proximal to the obstruction. This causes an increase in the onset of peristalsis (cramping) as the bowel attempts to force the material through the obstruction. Within a few hours the increased peristalsis ends, and the bowel becomes flaccid, decreasing the pressure. The result is increased fluid absorption by the bowel, which might explain your diahrea.
My suggestion Kim, is that you seek the advice of a colon-rectal physician to rule out the potential causea of an intestinal obstruction.
