I help with my son's high school cross country team. We have had 2 boys
this year develop an injury that I have not seen before. Both had swelling,
approximately the size of an egg above the left hip bone towards the front.
Each occurred after running a race with a good time. We were told possible
hip flexor injury. Does this sound like a possibility? What would be
suggested for healing and prevention of reoccurrence? How soon before we
can expect them to be competing?
Dawn, it sounds like a proximal retcus femoris (quadraceps) injury - a hip pointer. Naturally, use ice and compression with an ace bandage. You might have them taped with a hip-spika bandage which wraps the ace around the waist, and then the thigh, the transition occuring over the injured part leading to a little support of the quads. No running until running is pain free. This might take several weeks, but allow at least three weeks before letting them go at 100%. Time is the best healer in kids. Make sure they stretch daily.
