Have not run more than a mile or two since May 98 because my hip joints
hurt during, and especially after running. Went to cross training. Tried 15
min of running a couple months ago. Hips hurt.
Went to two orthopedic guys. First said lower back problem, second said
muscle attachment points.
Went to physical therapist, who stretched out the "capsule" of my hip joints,
sort of a cuff around the joint. Apparently this capsule contains the synovial
fluid, a film of which separates the moving bones in the joint. Also the capsule
attaches to both femur and I think, ilium, or part of the pelvis. The capsule
tightens, or contracts in some runners. The contracted capsule draws the bones
closer across the joint and excludes the lubricating synovial fluid.
After my third appointment, on Thursday, I decided to try a short run this
weekend. Today I ran for 35 min on grass and trails, with only a little hip
I would very much appreciate if others with similar history would share their
experience. It is my hope that the needles in my hip joints will not return if I
return to moderate running.
Please note, I can more than touch my toes, and regularly stretch. The stiffness
of the hip joints arises from the ligament-like cuff around the joint, which my
therapist says I can't stretch. It hurts quite a bit when he puts his body
weight on to force the head of the femur to stretch the
