I have experienced intermittent calf pain over the past 10 years that
seems to be getting more regular. I am 44 years old and run about 20
miles per week if I'm not laid up. I usually get the pain
several miles into the run. The pain usually develops quickly. It
feels like someone is driving their thumb into the back of my calf. I
also have some unrelated? tenderness in my achilles but I can live with
that. The calf pain stops me from running altogether.
I've had the pain in both calves but never at the same time. The pain
never occurs when I bicycle or cross country ski. I quit running
altogether during the November - March cross country ski season and my
legs feel great.
Steve, this sounds very much like a compartment syndrome - your history is made
a little confusing by the fact that the pain can be in either leg, and that it
doesn't occur with other activities. Nevertheless, I advise you to seek a
doppler study in order to rule out the compartment syndrome. Bets to know what
it is before you do serious damage.
