There is so much information about training for first marathons, but I
have yet to find any information about continuing training for future
marathons.
I completed my first marathon about 3 years ago and loved how I felt
when it was over. I am currently training for my next one in October
1999 and would like to do another in January 2000.
How close together should marathons be run and what is a good between
marathon traing schedule?
A few thoughts on the subject of training for back to back marathons. One idea
is that you should allow at least six to eight weeks for recovery between
marathons. You need to recover after a marathon since you most likely broke down
some tissue or another. Skeletal, musclular, and joint structures are all
susceptable to failure after repetitive pounding for several hours. Short runs
after your marathon should gradually be lengthened so that you can increase your
mileage each week 25-30 without pain or discomfort. At that point, the training
schedules you used for your first marathon can be used once again. Choosing to
run a marathon in October, and then again in December is a little close. I would
advise against it. Look for February or March to be safer.
