Hi Neil,
I am sitting here icing the inside of my upper calf, directly behind the
shin bone. It is painful for about 4 inches. The anatomy book
indicates that this is where the soleus is.
I've run steadily for four years, about 30 to 35 miles a week, am 39, 6
ft and 180 lbs. I've been through shin splints, ITB's, calf muscle
tears and have learned to stretch regularly and rest before most of the
overuse injuries occur.
I don't remember when this one started....it has just progressively
gotten worse. The leg will take my weight w/o limping, it just hurts
the first couple of miles and then eases off to a dull pain.
Should I take a break? See a doc?
Thanks for any help.
Matt, if you are not being stopped by the injury, you might try a temp. heel
lift to see if it provides you relief at present.
Continue to ice and stretch, and make sure that when you stretch the soleus, you
keep the heel down, but bend your knee! Also, consider using NSAID's, give your
doc a call and ask for a prescription strength NSAID.
