Neil,
I was wondering if there is anything I can do to eliminate the constant
onset of diarrhea that I get when I run long distances. Almost every time I
run over 4 miles, I get diarrhea. Sometimes it begins after I finish and
sometimes I have to stop running and search for a quick bathroom. I am
training for a marathon in January and this is really becoming a problem. I
never have any abdominal cramps or anything. This seems to last all day. I
hate taking medicine every time this happens but that seems to be the only
thing that can help. Do you have any suggestions? Any suggestion is
appreciated.
PS
I always carry a sports drink with me to stay hydrated.
Thanks
Paige
Interstingly, my advice is going to seem counterintuitive. I have seen this
before, and when asked, it turned out that my patient was actually constipated
except when she ran long distances, which was when she had diarrhea. We put her
on a high fiber diet (Juice Plus products natural whole food based soluble and
insoluble fiber - about 10 grams a day you can check out my Juice Plus site at
http://www.juiceplus.com/users/NC05751.asp), and after a week or two she cleared
up, and was able to run without diarrhea, but more importantly, she was no
longer constipated either.
Hopefully this is true for you too!
Neil
