I recently started running again (four weeks) after about a one year
layoff. On a run last week I started to notice an acute pain in my left
buttock/hip. I thougth it was no big deal at the time. I attempted to
walk 18 holes of golf the next day but found the pain to become intense
after about 14 or so holes. A week later the pain is still there. I am
able to work out on an elliptical trainer or ski machine without a hint
of pain, but anything with impact (including simply walking) is very
painful. It feels as if the hip joint is very loose. Also if I press
my hand fimly against my left buttock while walking the pain is greatly
reduced.
Webster - one of two conditions jump to mind - Piriformis syndrome, and/or
trochanteric bursitis. Ice does wonders for both, but you would do best seeing a
sports oriented PT. You should also check out the numerous posts I have made
regarding both of these conditions.
