I have had an ITB problem since training for a marathon last Nov. It has gotten
better. The orthopod I saw said I had an old LCL injury and my ITB was serving
as my LCL. My question, I have been wearing a knee brace for support on all of
my runs. Recently I have take up tennis. Should I continue to wear this knee
brace for all of my sporting activities? Sometimes I think it may be more
psychological and I should just get rid of it. Thanks Lisa
Lisa - the ITB is a difficult tissue to support with a knee brace. My sense is
that the brace is largely providing you with a sense of security, and it is
probably not necessary. On the other hand, the LCL is potentially supported by
your brace, especially if it has lateral stays (a metal rod on the outside of
the brace.) Should you get rid of it? Well, my advice is to try gradually
getting used to being without it, and you will find out if you need it or not.
