I have been struggling with knee injuries for about 8 months now. I just ran the
Chicago Marathon without experiencing any knee pain (I was using an "Ace"
knee brace which seems to help). I have noticed over the last 2 months that my
knee has significant swelling below the patella. However, there is usually
little or no pain either while running or afterwards. The swelling is very
noticeable when my leg is completely straight in a standing position - otherwise
it is invisible. The swelling goes all the way across from left to right.
Is this patella tendonitis? I don't want to start training again until I know
what the problem is and how to get the inflammation to go down.
Mervin - it is hard for me to tell why you are swollen - more than anything
else, it sounds like there might be some swelling in the capsule - this is
likely true if you have some stiffness flexing your knee all the way. Tendonitis
is not usually associated with "significant swelling". Considering your 8 month
struggle, it sounds like you are chronically inflammed.
Use ice. And perhaps a neoprene brace until the swelling subsides.
