Neil, I have a pain problem that I have not been able to get rid of since last summer. I am 51 run 10-12 miles a week and after a long hard bike ride that I had trained for last spring -4 days 4mtn passes-I found that after two hours of biking I would get a sharp pain just below the head of the bone on the outside of my lower leg. The pain had more to do with motion than pressure-on both the up and downstroke. This fall I find the pain returns when I run beginning after about two miles. It goes away when I stop running or bikeing, seems to leave no lingering pain upon cessation of the activity, the area is not tender at all, it did improve with a week off, and i have just recently found that I can sometimes make the pain appear by squatting down on my haunches. I guess I am going to have to quit running for a while. Any idea what this is. Thanks.
Carl, this one needs assessment. My best guess would be that the proximal Tib/fib joint is irritated. Treatment should include NSAID's, ice and cycling at a low intensity. Have a PT or Physical Medicine MD check it out for you. It is possible, but unlikely, that you have a stress fracture.
