Neil,
I run once or twice a week up to 10K without ever having foot problems. 3
days ago after a treadmill run of 5K at 14k/hr and a normal gym session also
using a ski/crosstrainer I rested for about 1 hr then played a set or singles
tennis. Towards the end of the set I started to get lateral heel pain and
since then I have found it painful to walk with pain on the lateral aspect
of the heel posterior to the 5th metatarsal head possibly the cuboid. It is
very tender to palpation at that point and laterally ap the side of my
hindfoot halfway up to the lateral malleolus. It doesnt seem to be right for
plantar fasciitis which I see quite a bit in my Patients (I'm a GP in UK)
Any advice?

Great question Tim. Actually, what you are describing sounds a lot like cuboid syndrome. This is actually fairly common, and occurs when the peroneal longus tendon, which uses the cuboid as a pulley, contracts suddenly causing the cuboid to sublux. Treatment is a manipulation of the cuboid (described by Stan Newell, DPM some years ago - I think in the early 80's or late 70's). Also you should tape the foot using the lo-dye technique until the syndrome resolves. Repeated manipulations are often necessary.
Good luck
