Recently returned form a medical conference, I have some thoughts on supplementation in general. Also, the best way to reduce chronic running injuries is to keep low grade inflammation down. How best to do that??? Read on. . .
For biochemical reasons, I won't go into the detail. Because of the series of events that lead to inflammation, and the role of anti-inflammation drugs as PGE-1 inhibitors - I believe that the role of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids is very, very important in the reduction of acute and chronic inflammation. Omega-3 FA can be found in cold water fish (oils) and Omega-6 FA in nuts and various vegetables like avocado.
Make sure you eat both cold water fish, or if not, take a good quality fish oil supplement ( I suggest a product from Nordic Naturals (www.nordicnaturals.com))
Besides these and the cartilage supplements I recommend, I am also a strong advocate of Juice Plus as a source of the bioflavonoids, antioxidants and phytonutrients we need to prolong our health and prevent aging and disease. There is significant anti-cancer evidence associated with the consumption of a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. There is good evidence demonstrating enhancements to the immune system, and reduction of lipid peroxidation all associated with a whole food diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. But because of the importance of a cross section of these products from celery to kale to broccoli to grapefruits to cherries etc, a dietary supplement becomes important to maximize the prevention allotted to you through your diet.
There is evidence that shows that you can strengthen your immune system, strengthen your artery walls, kill cancer cells, cause cancer cells to grow more slowly, suppress tumors, and improve prognosis. Natural sources of these supplements is preferable showing in research a significant difference in efficacy. for example, synthetic Beta carotene is shown to have zero potency as an antioxidant whereas the natural form is a potent antioxidant. By the way, as far as Vitamin E is concerned - find d-alpha-tocopheryl succinate since it is the best form of the product leading to better tissue accumulation and it is the most active form killing cancer cells both in vivo and in vitro.
At the same time it is ESSENTIAL that you avoid carcinogenic agents like MSG and artificial sweeteners (diet sodas especially) to help reduce your potential risk.
