Over the past year I have experienced pain in my Achilles tendon and on the top of my feet. At one point I was reduced to walking with a cane, it was so painful. Needless to say, running was out of the question and I gave it up for a few months. Going bcak to running the pain on the Achilles has come back, even after all this time. I usually run with an orthotic.
Chris - Achilles tendonitis begins early in life as heel pain, and gradually becomes a stiff tendon, and then an inflamed tendon. The fact that you have had so much pain and that it is back, suggests a very easily stressed tendon. My concern for you is the possibility of a tendon rupture...you have to be very careful to avoid overloading the tendon or you risk rupture!
Achilles tendon repair is a nasty surgery!
Use a heel lift to take a bit of the stress off, but mostly, slow down, your return to running should be very, very gradual, and you should make sure not to run with Achilles pain - you are only putting the tendon at greater risk.
