Broke my right little toe about 2 months ago. Took a month off from running to let it heal. Prior to the injury, I was running 25 miles a week. I started back running easy about 3 times a week 3-4 miles at 8 to 9 minute pace. Felt good so I picked up mileage to 5 miles. I began to experience a tightening in my left upper calf almost like a charlie-horse. It has remained tight for 3 days only loosening up a little. I was wondering if my right foot injury could be causing me to throw off my stride and result in my left calf tightening up? Thanks for your help.
John, you probably injured your long toe flexors while you were easing back into running. Try performing heel raises, we suggest about 40 continuous as a goal, both with a bent knee as well as a straight knee. See if that clears it up. Also, use ice...right over the calf for about 30 minutes.
