I had a femoral neck stress fracture last year after completing Chicago marathon. I was
on crutches for 4 months then slowly started back running. I'm runnng 3/wk now and
swimming 2/wk- did a triathlon last August. I've notice some hip pain again and it worries
me.I ignored the pain when I first had it prior to the injury. I'm wondering if it is something
to be concerned about now? (I'm a 54 yr old woman). People have told me that I may
have pain off and on as I increase activities. I started a spinning class also and ran 10
miles last Saturday. That's the farthest I've run since the injury. I had been keeping it to 4
to 8. What do you think?
Sally,
You say that you started back slowly after a long period of non-weight bearing. The t
hing i wonder about is what your bone density was going into the injury? If you had a s
usceptibility to re-fracture, I am sure your orthopedist would have alerted you to the fact.
To determine if you have re-fractured the hip, have someone who knows about running
watch you run to see if you are limping at all. i suspect that enough time has passed and
that this new ache and pain you are experiencing is probably another tissue
complaining. But if you have any sense of modifying your gait or the pain increasing,
don't rely on my judgment - get another MRI.
