The Marathon Trail Run was won by Bill Aronson in a fast 2:59:18. Cathy Wellman was the first woman to cover the 26+ mile distance. The trail marathon started past the 50 mile turnaround and ran back to the finish, providing all of the 50 milers with a chance to see the short course runners.
In the 50 Mile race, Steve Smucker took over the lead from John Carlson just after the 1st aid station and seemed to be flying. Steve commented "I never checked my watch until I hit Germantown and saw 3:05 - I knew that was 6 minutes slower than my 1995 record pace but still felt I had put some distance on the others. When I hit the turnaround point, I figured I'd be running for at least a mile or so before seeing the others, but alas, within 20 seconds Terry and Kerby were running 'smack dab' at me".
Smucker related that "Terry, according to Kerby, blasted out of the turnaround aid station with such velocity that he just let him go. Terry caught me around mile 27 or so and I let him pass. Kerby then caught me about a mile later, and I let him pass too, even though he muttered something about not wanting to take the lead because 'it's your trail.' We ran a short distance together before encountering the second head wound guy - Brent - who was bleeding real bad. Kerby and I tended him for a while until another guy, who was going the same way as Brent came up, then Kerby and I took off." Steve went on to say that "not wanting to slow Kerby down, I let him take the lead, but I really couldn't keep up. Shortly after that, at around mile 30, I died big time." At this point Steve acknowledged a 3rd place finish and cruised on in.
The trail conditions were near perfect. Portland had a very wet spring and this was evident by the vegetation overgrowing the trail in many places. A week without rain just prior to the race left the trail surface in quite good shape. Then what happened? Winterhawk 98 had more injuries than ever in the whole history of the race. Stewart Dutfield had to be medically evacuated and Brent Spilsbury also ended up at the same ER for nasty head wound treatment. Several others were noted with similar marks at the finish. It turns out that some of the trees that had fallen down across the trail had not been cut far enough back, so that if one was not careful they could be real head bonkers. Katrine Sundling-Hunt, last year's women's winner and course record holder, was running with a comfortable lead when she fell breaking a toe. Never since 1995, when the RD running in his own race, fell and dislocated his shoulder, has the Winterhawk had such a casualty toll.
The Winterhawk trail runs were established to remember Winterhawk Semler and establish a scholarship in his name at Gladstone High School. Winterhawk was unselfish in his devotion to working with runners, whether they were high school students or fellow ultra runners. The races are a tribute to this individual and his Native American ancestry.
This year's race saw a record number of 61 complete the 50 miler and 48 in the Trail Marathon. Another tribute to the race organizers and the excellent race they have put together.
Thanks to RD Red Fisher, Becky Semler and all the others of the race organization for putting on a special race for all those that participated.
