The Runningman Breaks World Record Robert Garside, AKA The Runningman, has today broken the world record of 17,814.40 km (11,134 miles), as recorded in The Guinness Book of World Records, for the longest distance ever run near the city of Norsemen in the Nullabor Plain of Western Australia. Garside, a 31 year-old Briton, setting out on Dec. 7, 1996 has today surpassed the record set on Oct. 2, 1988 by Sarah Covington-Fulcher of the United States. Garside's run has to-date taken him across 19 countries of Europe, Asia and the Australian continents. Highlights of the run include a record-breaking traverse of the Tibet and the Himalayan Plateau in the winter of 1998. Garside runs an average of 40 to 60km (over a marathon's distance) every day on the road. The greatest distance in one day to date has been 155km (over 96 miles) from Hu Zhou City, Zhe Jiang Province to Shanghai China. The record-breaking Run Around the World will continue with Garside attempting to traverse 6 continents "longways" and run a total of over 55,000km over a period of 5 years. Following Australia, Garside intends to run from the tip of South America to the tip of North America, and then the length of Africa before returning to the runĘs starting point in London, England.
