  • RRCA FINDS CURE FOR ROAD RAGE

With road rage driving the blood pressure readings of American commuters to dangerous levels, the Road Runner's Club of America (RRCA) has offered a bold solution to auto-induced anger.

"Forget the car, at least one day a year," urges RRCA president, Don Kardong. "Run to work."

And indeed, on Tuesday, October 20, 1998, people across the nation will forego motorized transportation to run to work in celebration of the RRCA's 2nd annual National Run to Work Day. The RRCA introduced National Run to Work Day last year, not simply as an antidote to road rage, but also to emphasize the role that local running clubs around the country play in fostering physical fitness in their communities. It is also a day to promote environmental awareness, runner safety and how enjoyable running can be.

Running clubs, individuals and businesses are already busy developing unique plans to celebrate the event. Commutes with local celebrities, cellular reports to radio talk shows by runners as they head to work, and group refueling stops at local bagel shops and latte stands are a few of the activities RRCA member clubs are working on.

"We know running to work isn't a total solution to road rage, even if it does help control blood pressure," says Kardong. "Running may never catch on as an alternate means of commuting, but we do hope to emphasize that running, because of its time efficiency and convenience, is a great way for people to get in shape before work, after work, or - now and then - on the way to work."

RRCA National Run to Work Day is sponsored by Breathe Right nasal strips, Running Times magazine, and PowerBar.

The Road Runners Club of America, a national non-profit association of 625 running clubs and 185,000 members, is based in Alexandria, VA. The organization is dedicated to promoting running as a healthful activity and competitive sport.
