  • SKAGIT FLATS MARATHON
    by Bob Dolphin

The Skagit Flats Marathon opens the fall marathon season in the Northwest. At the starting line on September 12, 1998, as 104 marathoners lined up with nearly 200 half marathoners in Burlington, WA, some of us looked at the maritime cloud cover overhead and wondered how much time we had before it evaporated and we would be running under sunny skies. As it developed, we had three hours of cloud cover, and the daily temperature maximum would not exceed 73' F. It turned out to be a good day for long distance running.

The marathon was won by Warren Cheney, 32, of Mt, Vernon in a time of 2:56:13. Congratulations to Chuck Cammack, 52, a Marathon Achiever (MA), of Albany, OR, for finishing in second place with a time of 2:59:05, The women's winner was Laura Baird, 25, of Seattle who finished 8th overall in a time of 3:17:21. In second, was Gunhild Swanson, 53, of Spokane who finished near Laura with a commendable time of 3:21:59.

Our friends and acquaintances in the marathon ran well. Listed below are their results:

     3;12:23 Michael Wakabayashi, 50+, Spokane
3:17:37 Glenn Tachiyama, 41, (MA), Seattle
3:33:16 Steve Israel, 45+, Black Diamond
     3:36:30 Ron Fowler, 50, Seattle
     3:39:08 Wiley Hurst, 61, Yakima
     3:51:08 Stan Nakashima, 46,(MA),Mt. Vernon
3:51:08 Jon Nevitt, 59, Mt. Vernon
     3:53:14 Melinda Moore, 44, Puyallup
     3:54:27 Ken Bonner, 55+, Victoria, B.C.
     3:59:22 Yau-Ming Chien, 55+, Bellevue
     3:59:37 Jack Swanson, 64, 2nd, Spokane
     3:59:38 Diane Wilcox, 46, Bothell
4:08:00 Pipasa Glass, 30+, (Sri Chinmoy)
     4:17:05 Bob Dolphin, 68, Renton
     4:17:05 Clark Nichols, 50
     4:27:50 Cheri Gillis, 46,(MA),Woodinville
     4:30:00 Don Brooks, 57, Pasco
     4:43:00 Ed Galiger, 59, Seattle
5:20:50 Herb Allen, 56, Bainbridge Island
     5:32:55 Carol Dellinger, 35,(MA),Spokane
     5:42:43 Jimmy Smith, 57, Bremerton

Kudos to the following runners who were first in their age groups: Chuck Cammack, Michael Wakabayashi, Gunhild Swanson, Steve Israel, Wiley Hurst, Melinda Moore, Diane Wilcox, and Daulot Fountain (half marathon).

A few of our friends participated in the half marathon, and their results were as follows:

    1:29:09 Daulot Fountain, Seattle
    1:39:05 Ron Warner, Tacoma
    1:39:32 Pat Warner, Tacoma
    1:41:15 Ron Nicholl, Gig Harbor
    1:43:25 Sue Cammack, Albany, OR

My race went fine for 10K, and I was moving up in the field slowly when I "hit the wall." I'm used to doing this in the last 10K but not twenty miles from the finish. I dropped from an initial 8 minute pace to 10-11 minutes per mile in the second half of the race. Although I had raced a 1:48:45 (8:18) at the Super Jock and Jill Half Marathon five days earlier, I felt fine --- but my legs wouldn't work! At any rate, I finished with a 4:17:05 (9:51), 67th of 104 starters and first 65-69M. Now that I have this long run out of the way, I look forward to the Portland Marathon with anticipation.
