  • THE SPOKANE MARATHON
    by Bob Dolphin

The Spokane Marathon course leaves Riverside Park at Spokane, WA, and follows a hilly route downstream on roads and then on paved trails on the south side of the Spokane River. At a bridge near mile 14, the course crosses to the other side and then returns to Spokane on the north side of the river. It follows a hilly, winding, two-lane road that is near the river's shore back to the finish by the starting line. It is one of the most scenic courses that I run--with a turbulent river at the base of a deep gorge in a Ponderosa Pine forest. As an added treat, there is a lot of fall color at this time of the year. Like many scenic marathons, it is a difficult course due to the many long, and often, steep hills.

On October 17, 1998, several hundred runners accepted the challenge, and most finished. In an unusually tight race Brian Scultz won with a time of 2 hours, 50 minutes, and 33 seconds, a lead of only four seconds ahead of Trevor Bucknell. The first woman to finish was Christina Carrigan with a notable 3:12:47. In second place was Gunhild Swanson, 54, of Spokane. In her third marathon in 13 days she ran a 3:21:46--one minute faster than Portland's Marathon on October 4th and only three minutes slower than her performance at Victoria, B.C., on October llth. She again demonstrated her superiority in the over-50 female ranks and ran her second consecutive reverse split race!!!

The race results were not available at the time of this writing. However, my wife Lenore recorded the following times at the finish line and from conversations with some of our running friends:

    3:16:16 Chuck Bodeen, 47, 3rd
    3:21:00 Steve Pierce, 35
    3:49:31 Paul Hinen, 50+
    3:49:31 Jerry Buchman, 40+
    3:52:14 Todd Byers, 35
    4:04:40 Jack Swanson, 64, 2nd
    4:54:36 Mel Preedy, 65, 3rd

Chuck Bodeen, 47, of Yakima and I had a chance to visit before the race started. I was pleased to learn that he had a good race and finished with a fine time of 3:16:16. Mel Preedy ran with an injured leg as he did two weeks earlier in the Portland Marathon. Illness and injury have affected his marathon times temporarily but not his willingness to overcome adversity. He finished third in the 65+ division.

Jack Swanson, 64, of Spokane and I had been finishing within a minute of each other at Portland and Victoria in the previous two weekends, but he ran off and left me in this one. He finished with a 4:04:40, and I was far behind with a 4:17:58. With good weather (40's, overcast, calm), I felt fine, but ran slower and walked/ran the steepest hills. My finishing time gave me a second place award for 65+ participants. John Parrot placed first with a time of approximately four hours.
