  • The Autumn Leaves 50K
    by Bob Dolphin

The Autumn Leaves 50K, an ultramarathon that the Oregon Road Runners Club puts on each year in late October, certainly lived up to its name. On Sunday, October 25, 1998, the fall color at the race site in Champoeg State Park south of Portland, OR, was at its peak. The leaves of the big-leaf maples and black cottonwoods were a bright yellow on the five-mile course, an out-and-back loop by the tree-lined Willamette River.

The participants for the 50 Mile Race, the 50 Kilometer Race, and the five 5-person Relay Teams shared the same course starting at 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 9:30 a.m. We had good running weather with temperatures in the low 60's, partly cloudy skies, and a light breeze. The course is on asphalt with a lot of shade, and water and sports drinks were available three times on every five-mile loop. All of this contributed to ideal running conditions.

In two previous years I had run the 50 Mile Race, but this year I opted to join 24 other runners for the 50 Kilometer Race, Craig Thornley, Craig Thornley, 30-34, ran unchallenged to a 3:34:39 win. In second place, Eb Engelmann, 56, of Salem finished with a 4:01:25. On October 3-4 Eb had run 111 miles at Megan's Run for a second place and the next Sunday had run a 3:22:17 at the Royal Victoria Marathon. What remarkable performances!! Third and fourth overall finishers were the first two women participants: Stephanie Michaud, 25-29, in a time of 4:08:54 and Liz Chamberlin, 45-49, in 4:16:58.

My run went well, I ran a nine minute mile on the first five-mile loop, then slowed to a ten mile pace for the rest of the race--fading on the last lap. I finished with a 5:02:22 (9:45), 10th of 22 finishers, and first of two in the 65-69 Male Division.

The results of the 50 K follow:

    	 1. 3:34:39 Craig Thornley, 30-34
    	 2. 4:01:25 Eb Engelmann, 55-59
    	 3. 4:08:54 Stephanie Michaud, 25-29
    	 4. 4:16:58 Liz Chamberlin, 45-49
    	 5. 4:21:43 Marc Wiitala, 50-54
    	 6. 4:33:31 Ian Harrasser, 35-39
    	 7. 4:42:54 Mick Evans, 45-49
    	 8. 4:55:27 Caleb Currie, 20-24
    	 9. 4:55:55 Michael Heffernan, Jr., 35-39
    	10. 5:02:22 Bob Dolphin, 69
    	11. 5:07:43 Paul Carter-Stein, 35-59
    	12. 5:10:50 Jeff Maurer, 40-44
    	13. 5:11:03 Richard Bemrose, 55-59
    	14. 5:16:10 Ronda Sundermeier, 30-34
    	15. 5:18:06 Stacy Bunton, 35-39
    	16. 5:21:37 Hedy Chun, 25-29
    	17. 5:22:38 John Bandur, 60-64
    	18. 5:33:00 Peter Bennink, 40-44
    	19. 5:42:08 Rob Volkenand, 67
    	20. 6:03:46 Deborah Sipe, 45-49
    	21. 6:19:15 Seth Sundin, 55-59
    	22. 6:34:40 Spud Henderson, 55-59

It was great to see and greet some of my running friends in the 50 mile field. They were Dave Dutton, Randy Peterson, Steve Frederickson, Fred Stafford, Jerry Duncan, Lary Webster, (running well several years after cardiac surgery), and Karl Jensen. Karl was running for a qualifying time for the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run and made it easily.

Lis Cooper, race director, and her associate directors, Julie Peyton and Alan Cabelly, did a great job organizing the events and providing a variety of food and drinks for all of the runners as they passed through the pavilion near the start/finish area. In addition to pleasant memories, the runners took home classy turtle-necked T-shirts, leaf shaped finishers medals, an assortment of drawing prizes, and age class awards. A large staff of volunteers assisted in making the 1998 running of the Autumn Leaves 50K a great day.
