by Gerry Swan Kenosha, Wisconsin, Saturday, November 21--The Clan set a new national championship meet record with 22 points to win their third consecutive title, breaking the previous record set by Adams State in the 1981 meet. Malone College (Ohio) finished second with 146 points. A field of 330 participants, representing 85 institutions took part in the 5-k race held under clear skies and temperatures in the 40's on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Simon Fraser's Heather deGeest (Burnaby, BC) won her second straight individual title as the Clan senior covered the distance in the very good time of 17:06. Dana Boyle of University of Puget sound was second as she trailed deGeest by 27 seconds to finish in 17:33. All five of the Clan scorers placed amongst the first 11 finishers with Deseigne McLean (Pt Alberni, BC) third in 17:37 pb, Melissa Clement (New Brunswick) fourth in 17:45 pb, Carolyn Murray (Alberta) seventh in 18:08 and Julie Toms (Pt. Alberni, BC) eleventh 18:18 pb. The other SFU team members included Renee Embree (Ottawa) 13th in 18:21 pb and Molly Bannerman (Kelowna) 58th in 19:08. The team win places Simon Fraser at the top of the all-time team championships list with five and the Clan also leads the all-time individual championship list with nine individuals from the school taking first place. The Clan Women's team is coached by former Canadian International, Brit Townsend. Over Townsend's 12 years as an international she established five Canadian records and placed eighth in the 1500 metres at the 1983 World Championships and seventh at the 1984 Olympic Games. The SFU men's team placed 10th amongst the 34 teams and 325 runners. The 8-k race was won by Life Universities Silah Misoi in the excellent time of 23:05. Life College won the team title scoring 41 points with Lindenwood (Mo.) second with 81 points. The Clan men scored 335 points and were led by Matt Johston's 28th place finish (25:38). The other Clan scorers included Mike Passmore 38th--(24:49), Jeff Kwantes 98th (26:38), Chris Scroggie 99th (26:38), and Aaron Heidt 131st (27:00) The first 30 runners in each race are awarded the distinction of being named NAIA All Americans. Six SFU women and one man received this award.
