  • Brit Townsend New Head Coach of Simon Fraser University's Cross Country and Track and Field Programs
    by Gerry Swan

Michael Dinning, Athletic Director at Simon Fraser University, has announced that Brit Townsend has been appointed to the position of Head Coach, Cross Country and Track and Field at the Burnaby Mountain School. Townsend, a graduate of SFU, takes over from Zenon Smiechowski who after 17 years as the Clan coach has resigned for personal reasons. Townsend, a former Canadian Olympian who during her 13 years as a Canadian International established seven Canadian records, for the past three years has been the coach of the SFU Women's CC team that won three straight NAIA team titles.

Last year the Clan accomplished an unprecedented triple by winning NAIA team titles at both the Indoor and Outdoor Championships as well as the cross country title. Townsend's first priority for the coming collegiate track and field season will be to prepare her team to defend these titles.

Assistants Scott Svelander ,who is in charge of the men's distance program, and power/speed coach Tom Dickson will remain in those positions and the university will continue its close relationship with the Fraser Valley Regional Centre. Former SFU Centre Master coach Gerry Swan will also continue to add his support to the Clan program. "The strength of our program comes because of the knowledge, cooperation and effort of all our coaches and I am very happy to have their continuing support. In addition, the positive publicity about SFU generated by McLean magazine's University addition, our comprehensive program and possible financial assistance has attracted many fine athletes to the school" stated Townsend.

Simon Fraser University offers a full program of cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field and is a member of the American NAIA Association. SFU is one of the few school's in Canada able to offer scholarship monies to aspiring student/athletes.

This year's Indoor Nationals take place in Lincoln, Nebraska and the outdoor meet is scheduled for Florida.

Townsend can be reached at the Athletic Offices of Simon Fraser University by phoning 604-291-3382.
