by Geoff Thurner WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — The Pacific-10 Conference bestowed one final honor on University of Oregon men's cross country coach Bill Dellinger Friday Dec. 12, 1998 , as the Duck mentor was named 1998 Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. "I'm honored and flattered that the Pac-10 coaches gave me this recognition," Dellinger said. "We've had a fine program for a number of years, and this season we again had great depth with several solid runners up front." At the Pac-10 Championships' first trip to Eugene in October, the 32nd-year coach led his team to a near-upset of then-No. 1 Stanford as the Ducks fell two points shy of the win, 48-50, also putting their seventh runner in front of Stanford's fifth and final scorer. Three weeks later, Oregon notched its 15th top-five finish at the NCAA Championships under his guidance thanks to a fifth-place finish at the meet at Lawrence, Kan. Other season highlights included runner-up team finishes at the West Region Championships and the Bob Timmons Pre-NCAA Invitational, along with the team's season-opening win at the Big Cross meet in Pasco, Wash. Friday's coaching award was Dellinger's 10th from the conference in a career featuring 10 conference team titles and nine individual crowns. At the NCAA level his legacy is equally impressive as the Ducks have compiled four national team titles and four individual victories since 1969. Last week he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the U.S. Track Coaches Association. On the women's side, Stanford's Beth Alford-Sullivan claimed her third straight Pac-10 coach of the year honor after leading the Cardinal to their third consecutive team title and fifth in the past six years. Among athletes, Arizona's Abdi Abdirahman and Amy Skieresz were named Men's and Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Year. Both runners won their respective conference and region titles, then finished second in the NCAA chases in November.
