  • Duck Track and Field Teams Travel to Pullman
    by Geoff Thurner

    April 3, 1999
PULLMAN, Wash. — In his first-ever dual meet as men's track and field coach, Martin Smith led his Ducks to one of its most competitive efforts of the year before falling 83-65 in the tightly-contested battle, while the Cougar women beat the Ducks, 114-40. The Duck men and women beat Idaho by scores of 105-48 and 83-62, respectively.

On the men's side, even with several All-America distance runners absent Saturday recovering from last week's qualifying runs at Stanford, Oregon still won five events, while the Cougars took seven events, three courtesy of their NCAA champion Bernard Lagat.

Oregon, even crossed the line first in another event, the 4x100 relay, but had the win disqualified when WSU coach Rick Sloan protested the decision nearly an hour later, based on an Oregon uniform discrepancy.

Regardless of the team race outcome, Smith was pleased with his team's competitive effort, one which featured eight personal bests in the field events. Times in the running events, however, were slowed by consistent 10-15 crosswinds and a high temperature of 42 degrees, while 1 1/2 inches of snow on the field greeted the athletes Saturday morning.

"I thought we had some very nice breakthroughs as a team," Smith said. "We competed very hard across the board and were in the meet through the end. Ryan Keith had a big breakthrough with his first NCAA qualifying mark in the javelin, and the rest of the throws crew really stepped up, and so did a lot of the jumpers. Piotr showed how tough a competitor he was, and even tried some good attempts at 18-5 in the pole vault after winning the long jump and 4x100."

Leading the way for the Ducks, sophomore Ryan Keith unleashed an eight-foot personal best (220-5) and his first NCAA provisional effort to win the javelin by 13 feet over senior teammate Chris Thomas (second, 207-6). Keith's mark, which bettered the NCAA qualifying standard of 219-10 by seven inches, was Oregon's first in the event since Jim Lile threw 225-2 in 1996.

Senior Piotr Buciarski was just as impressive with wins in the the pole vault (17-0 3/4) and long jump (24-9 1/2), while he ran on the 4x100 relay that was disqualified from the win.

Other field event personal bests came from junior Colin McArthur in the long jump (third, 23-8) and triple jump (fifth, 46-4 3/4), freshman John Bello in the shot put (second, 52-2) and discus (sixth, 165-10) and sophomore Rian Ingrim in the hammer (fourth, 176-1) and shot put (fourth, 50-1 3/4).

The distances, however, proved the difference in the team race as WSU's eight-time All-American Bernard Lagat, the Pac-10 record holder in the 1,500, won both the 800 (1:51.91) and 1,500 (3:55.54) before making an impromptu appearance in the 3,000 (first, 8:37.08) to hold off the Ducks in the team race.

Other strong scoring efforts came from sophomore Kyley Johnson in the high jump (first, 6-6 3/4); the 4x400 relay of junior Jermaine Hanspard, senior Richard Girvan, sophomore Ross Krempley and junior Howard Moore (first, 3:14.00); Girvan in the 800 (second, 1:52.75); and junior Todd Humcke in the 1,500 (second, 3:58.36).

On the women's side, the Ducks suffered only their second loss in 27 meetings with Washington State since 1977.

Senior Marie Davis posted one of Oregon's five wins Saturday, and one of two in the distances. The five-time All-American won the 3,000 (9:58.81), then finished a narrow second (4:39.20) to senior teammate Kaarin Knudson in the 1,500 (4:39.14). Knudson also doubled Saturday, finishing a narrow second in the 800 (2:09.99) to WSU's Alishia Booterbaugh (2:09.59).

In the pole vault, sophomore Karina Elstrom notched her second-best effort of the outdoor campaign, with an NCAA provisional mark of 12-3 1/2, edging Washington State's Jeannette Martus (11-9 3/4). UO freshman Niki Reed and sophomore Holly Speight tied for third at 11-3 3/4.

Senior Heidi Fisk added a win in the shot put (45-5), only two inches off her personalal outdoor best, in her return from a serious ankle sprain last week in Stanford. The Lebanon, Ore., product also came up just short of a season best in the discus, taking third (151-4), while leading the Ducks in the hammer (fourth, 152-9).

Also in the field events, junior Hilary Holly finished third in the long jump with an outdoor personal best of 19-0 3/4, while senior Stacy Robson registered a one-inch personal best of 18-9 1/4 to take fourth place. The duo returned for personal bests in the triple jump, as Robson took third (39-2 1/2) and Holly finished fourth (38-10 1/4).

Other solid marks came from senior Tish Henes in the 400 (second, 56.32), junior Katie Crabb in the 800 (third, 2:13.19) and 3,000 (third, 10:08.49); and junior Heather Hill in the hammer (fifth, 146-5).

"We knew Washington State was really good," said Oregon women's coach Tom Heinonen, "and they went after us till the end —- two of their people even did five events each. I thought all of our people competed hard, just some didn't compete very well. We still got PR jumps from Hilary and Stacy in both the long jump and triple jump. Marie cruised through in the 1,500 and 3,000. Kaarin had her fastest split ever (56.1) in the 4x400 relay and Aisha Wallace ran a tough anchor leg (56.2) to win the 4x400. Heidi won the shot put with a long early throw, but by the time she got to the hammer, her ankle was pretty sore. In the pole vault, Karina said she had never competed with so much clothing on -- there was still lots of snow on the field when they competed at 11:00 a.m. -- but she withstood a serious challenge from their top vaulter."

Looking ahead, both teams return home to Hayward Field for the first-annual Hayward Relays, Saturday, April 10. Action begins at 11:00 a.m. with the women's javelin, while running action starts at 2:00 with the 4x100 relay and ends with the 4x400 relay at 4:30 p.m. Teams competing besides Oregon include Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Washington State.
