  • Pacific Rim One Day Run
    by Bob Dolphin

Cold, rainy, and windy are the adjectives that most years describe the weather conditions for the Pacific Rim One Day Run in Sacajawea Park at Longview in southwestern Washington. However, on March 20-21, 1999, the participants in this run were pleasantly surprised to find partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 40's and 50's on the one mile loop course. The fair weather brought out a good turnout of ultra runners and a few ultra walkers with a higher percentage than usual staying on the course for longer periods of time. As a result, more runners than ever before ran 100 miles or more around the scenic oxbow lake. Eight of the 55 participants covered 100 miles at Pacific Rim!

Scott Diamond, 25+, running his first 24-hour run surprised himself by winning the race with 119 miles. Scott McQueeney had a similar experience and finished second with 111 miles. Perennial front runner, Eb Engelmann, 57, finished in third place with an accumulation of 109 miles. Kyly McMurray, 38, was the women's winner and fourth overall competitor. This was her fifth consecutive win--all over the century mark!! Jodi Kartes, 25+, was the second women's finisher and sixth overall with 102 miles. This was her first ultra marathon, and she ran exceptionally well. Mike Christianson met his goal of 100K in 10:11:58 --the first runner to reach that distance.

In his first race beyond a marathon distance James Klarich, 35+, ran 103 miles and finished in fifth position. Miller Myers and David Olsho, 47, aspired to run a hundred miles--and both did so! This was David's first attempt at this distance. His wife, Lynne Werner, acting as crew for him managed to run 55 miles herself and placed as the fifth woman participant. There were other ultra neophytes who ran well on their first outings. Mary Klarich, 36, and Wiley Hurst, 62, for example ran 57 and 53 miles respectively. For the second year in a row Kurt Thatcher, 14, was the youngest participant. He ran 50K with his father, Jim Thatcher.

Two married couples were honored at the Sunday morning breakfast/award ceremony for their outstanding accomplishments. James and Mary Klarich of Yakima received the fourth place men's and women's plaques, and David Olsho and Lynne Werner of Seattle were awarded sixth and fifth place plaques. Three more married couples participated, ran well, and accomplished their goals. Chuck Cammack, 53, was the first runner to complete 50 miles. He did this in 7:05:28, and his wife Sue, 54, ran 33 miles in 6:31:30. Ron and Pat Warner ran together--50K in 5:03:18. John Coffey completed 32 miles, and his wife Amy finished 50K. Another family group participating were the Stoyles. Steve Stoyles came down to run with his dad, Bob, and his nephew, Brandon. Steve completed 50K, but Bob was running injured, so he and Brandon stopped early.

Another successful Pacific Rim One Day Run is history. It will be remembered for good weather, good food and drink, and great volunteers. Appreciation is extended to Fred Willet, race director, and his crew of volunteers for conducting a first-class event!!
