  • Lindsey Wins Shot & Discus; Two Husky Javelin Throwers Reach NCAA Standard
    April 10, 1999
    by Dan Lepse

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior Ben Lindsey registered the nation's second best discus throw and also won the men's shot put competition Saturday as the Washington men's and women's team both finished second in the San Diego State Quad Meet at the Arco Olympic Training Center.

Michigan won the men's and women's team titles. The Wolverine women edged runner-up Washington 197-196 while San Diego State was third (158.5) and New Mexico fourth (110.5). Michigan's men posted a winning total of 165.5 points followed by the Huskies (158) and New Mexico (68.5).

Lindsey (Lynnwood, Wash.) heaved the discus 200-feet, 8-inches to win the men's title by over 18 feet and reach the automatic qualifying standard. The two-time discus All-American guaranteed a berth at the NCAA Championships, scheduled for June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho.

Lindsey posted a winning shot put of 58-0 1/2 that reached the NCAA provisional standard.

Sophomore Justin St. Clair (Tacoma, Wash.) won the javelin with a career-best mark of 225-10 that is the ninth best performance by an NCAA competitor this season. He improved his NCAA provisional qualifying effort that earned him Pac-10 Athlete of the Week honors on Monday.

Freshman Rob Minnitti (Port Orchard, Wash.) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 222-10 that eclipsed the NCAA provisional standard.

The Washington women swept top honors in the throwing events. Junior Sesila Thomas won the shot put (48-11 3/4), freshman Cecilia Barnes won the discus (163-10), senior Rebecca Morrison won the hammer (168-4) and junior Chris Withey won the javelin (125-4).

Sophomore Ja'Warren Hooker (Ellensburg, Wash.) is successfully returning from a stress fracture in his left leg. Hooker clocked winning time of 10.46 seconds in the 100-meter race and placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.63.

The Washington track & field teams compete at home next weekend, hosting Washington State in a dual meet on Saturday, April 17.
