April 12, 1999 by Geoff Thurner Eugene OR — The University of Oregon women’s track and field team turned in one of its bigger recruiting coups in recent history as Coquille’s Amy Nickerson signed a letter of intent to join the Duck distance program in the fall. “Amy has been a dominant runner throughout high school at the 3A level and is clearly getting stronger every year,” Oregon women’s coach Tom Heinonen said. “Amy is such a great college prospect, and we expect her to only continue to improve. She hasn’t gotten much competition at the 3A level; she plays basketball in the winter; and she runs all her races in flats. Even without a lot of national level competition, she clearly belongs among the elite American preps.” The state’s top 3A distance runner, she won the 800 and 1,500 meters for Coquille High School as a freshman, sophomore and junior to go along with three 3A state harrier titles, along with a third-place finish at the state cross country meet as a sophomore. Last season she owned season bests of 2:14.09 in the 800 and 4:36.62 in the 1,500, while her 1,500 personal best of 4:34.93 dates back to her sophomore season in 1997. At the national level, she finished third in the mile at the National Scholastic Championships, one of the nation’s top invitationals, last June after her junior season. Away from the track, she has also been a varsity starter in basketball.
