by Dan Lepse April 13, 1999 WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- University of Washington junior Ben Lindsey was named the Pacific-10 Conference men's track & field athlete of the week, Commissioner Thomas Hansen announced Tuesday. On Saturday in San Diego, Calif., Lindsey recorded the second-best discus throw in the nation this year with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 200-feet, 8-inches. He won the discus title at Saturday's San Diego State Quad Meet, outhrowing his closest competitor by over 18 feet. Lindsey also had a winning shot put of 58-0 1/2. A product of Lynnwood (Wash.) High School, Lindsey is a three-time NCAA All-American who secured his third consecutive berth to the national championships. The 1999 NCAA meet is scheduled for June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho. Lindsey finished fifth in the discus at the 1998 NCAA Championships after placing ninth as a freshman in 1997. Lindsey and his Washington teammates host Washington State in a dual meet on Saturday, April 17 at Husky Stadium beginning at 10:30 a.m.
