by Dan Lepse April 24, 1999 DES MOINES, Iowa - Washington distance standouts Anna Aoki, Deeja Youngquist and Kara Syrdal each registered NCAA provisional qualifying times on Saturday during a speedy 5,000-meter women's race at the prestigious Drake Relays. Baylor's Sherri Smith raced to a winning time of 16:10.62, the nation's second-fastest [sic; 4th-fastest NCAA actually ] 5,000-meter time this season. Aoki clocked a sixth-place time of 16:45.73 that is the seventh-fastest time in Husky history. Younguist placed seventh in 16:46.58 and Syrdal was eighth in 16:47.31. Aoki, a junior from Fort Vancouver (Wash.) High School, and Youngquist, a senior from Enumclaw (Wash.) High School, have also both reached the NCAA provisional standards in the 3,000- and 10,000-meter events. Washington's sophomore sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker (Ellensburg, Wash.) was unable to compete in the 100- and 200-meter events in which he was scheduled. Hooker, the defending Drake 100-meter champion, suffered a cramp in his right hamstring during Friday's qualifying heats. The Husky hurdle corps displayed its talent in the shuttle hurdle relay events. Washington posted a winning time of 57.54 in the 400-meter women's event. Northern Iowa finished second (58.99) and Purdue was third (1:00.57). In the men's 440-meter event, the Huskies placed third in 57.62. Iowa State won (56.18) followed by Toledo (56.79).
