by Gerry Swan Simon Fraser University will host the 2000 and 2,0001 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The announcement was made Tuesday in Florida where this year's NAIA Championships are presntly taking place. The meet will be held at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford and will be hosted by SFU in conjunction with the Valley Royals Track Club. The NAIA serves more than 1,000 colleges and universities from all parts of the United States and SFU and the University of Windsor from Canada. The meet will draw 1,000 athletes and coaches for the three day Championships that will take place on May 25, 26, 27 of next year. SFU hosted the NAIA Championships in both 1992 and 1993 at Rotary Stadium and at that time some 14 new records were established. SFU Athletic Director Mike Dinning stated that "we are very excited about having been awarded these Championships and the school intends to do all in its power to make sure that eveything possible will be done to put on a great meet." Rotary Stadium was selected as the meet site because it is a superb, fully equipped facility and is the home training centre of the Valley Royals track club an organization that a proven history of successfully hosting important track and field fixtures at the venue. During the past few years Rotary Stadium has been the site of both Canadian Senior and Junior Championships, the Harry Jerome Classic and several international meets. Kevin Dees, who oversees track and field for the NAIA, said that the American schools were very excited about having the championships in Canada as in addition to being able to compete of a fine facility the trip North is a great recruiting device for it's member schools. In addition he said that the difference in the dollar exhcange rates between the US and Canada makes having the meet in Canada very attractive from a monetary stand point.
