  • 1999 COEUR d'ALENE MARATHON MARATHON
    by Bob Dolphin

A big topic of discussion this year at the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Marathon on Sunday, May 30, 1999, was the new course. Actually, it was a modification of the old course with the first eleven miles and the last four miles being the same---and veteran runners felt at home on these portions. The new out-and-back section along Lake Coeur d'Alene is a valuable addition to the event. The marathoners and half marathoners ran on Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive or the paved Centennial Trail that was adjacent to it. Striking vistas of the huge lake, distant mountains and lakeside, forested bluffs were in constant view as the runners negotiated two long, major hills and several minor grades.

The winner of the marathon was Mark Tarr, 37, of Columbia Falls, Montana. He finished with a 2:39:35---well ahead of Bryan Schultz, 35+ of Spokane, WA, who ran a 2:43:51. The first woman finisher was Heidi Cherel, 34, from Louisville, KY, with a time of 3:15:43.

With a long out-and-back section, we were able to see the last runners of the half marathon field and to greet friends and acquaintances in the marathon. Glenn Tachiyama, 40+, Marathon Achiever (MA) from Seattle, WA, was the first familiar face that I saw in this section. He finished in 2:56:38, 1st 40-45M. Gunhild Swanson, 54, MA from Spokane was recognized next. Recovering from an injury, she ran only the half marathon in Olympia two weeks ago but moved up to the full Rock and Roll Marathon in San Diego a week ago. Her time today was 3:30:43, 2nd 50-54F.

Running in his home town, Steve Pierce, 36, MA of Coeur d'Alene, ran a 3:43:18. Adding to his three consecutive May marathons, he will run Winterhawk 50 at Portland, OR, and the Columbia River Gorge Marathon on June 5 and 6, 1999!!! It was good to see Davey Jones, 50+ of Seattle, again. Our paths last crossed at the SRI Chinmoy 10 Miler in March. Today he completed the marathon in 3:43:26.

In quick succession there were Mel Preedy, 66, MA of Ravensdale, WA, (3:46:32), 1st 65-69M running his fourth marathon in May; Wiley Hurst, 62, from Yakima,WA, (3:51:37); and Sylvia Quinn, 62, of Spokane (3:54:30), 1st 60-64F.

My role model, Harold Copeland, 79, MA from Richland, WA, has completed more than 100 marathons. Today he won his age division with a time of 5:05:51.

The finishing times for others I saw were:

4:07:09-Russ Akers, 66, MA of College Place, WA, 2nd 65-69M
    4:08:16-Pat Quinn, 65, from Spokane, 3rd 65-69M
    4 :19 :18-Yau-Ming Chen, 55+ from Bellevue, WA
    4 : 20 :04-Mac Bohlman, 63; MA from Walla Walla, WA, 4th 60-64M
    4 :21:13-Jack Swanson, 66, MA from Spokane, 5th 65-69
5:16:51-Dave Vent, 61, MA from Spokane who has completed all 50 STATES and DC!!
    5:41:00 - Charles Baldridge, 75+, from Garden Valley, ID, 2nd 75-79M

Running into a cool breeze in the last ten miles helped to moderate the low 70's temperatures. I finished my fourth May marathon with a 4:08::26---just ten seconds behind my friend Pat Quinn and one minute and seventeen seconds behind my friend Russ Akers---for fourth place in our 65-69M division. Lenore and I had a good time and look forward to the new and improved Coeur d' Alene Marathon next year !
