  • SRI CHINMOY MARATHON
    by Bob Dolphin

The Sri Chinmoy Marathon was held at Myrtle Edwards Park in Seattle on Sunday, June 27, 1999, with excellent running conditions. The morning event had overcast skies, air temperatures in the low 60's, and moderate sea breezes from Elliott Bay. The one mile narrow loop course gives the runners spectacular views of the Seattle Skyline, mountains in the distance, and bay activity of passing ferries, tour boats, sailboats and other craft. In each loop we passed a rose garden in bloom and full of pleasant aromas. We had to savor the experience because next year the marathon will be relocated.

In a civic improvement program the narrow park will be unearthed and a storm sewage line under the race course will be removed and replaced with an upgraded system to minimize water pollution. It will be three years before the park will be relandscaped and ready for recreational activity again. Perhaps at that time the Sri Chinmoy Races (5 mile, 10K, 10 mile, ½ marathon and marathon) will return to Myrtle Edwards Park. In the meantime, they will be held in some other local park.

In the marathon this year there were seventeen participants, including five runners who came to run a concurrent half marathon that wasn't offered this time. However, they were permitted to run a half marathon as a training run which they chose to do. Most of the marathoners were running friends and Marathon Achievers (MA). Gene Trahern, 36, MA of Brier, WA, ran a good race to finish first with a fine time of 3:04:28. Gene has run 19 marathons and approximately 80 ultramarathons. He ran with Michael Wakabashi, 51, of Spokane (approximately 67 marathons) who finished close behind him with a 3:07:34.

In third place was Doug Beyerlein, 48, of Mill Creek who has run many marathons and ultras (3:20:10). Dave Dutton, 42, MA of Mt. Vernon, (3:30:58), likes the ultras. He has run in excess of 60 marathons and 66 ultramarathons. Davey Jones, 53, of Seattle (3:36:58) runs many marathons. His count is about 78 marathons. Ron Lev, 32, of Seattle (3:37:34) finished in sixth position. Next was Ron Fowler, 51, of Seattle (3:43:18) who runs many marathons in the Northwest.

Adam Bush, 27, a marine from Oak Harbor, is a friendly runner who ran in 3:46:35. Stan Nakashima, 47, MA from Mt. Vernon has run more than 200 marathons and ultras. At the Sri Chinmoy Marathon he ran a 3:56:31. Close behind him was Mel Preedy, 66, MA from Ravensdale with approximately 175 marathons and ultras who finished well in 3:56:39. Mel holds the course record for 60+ male runners with a time of 3:35:24. Ted Clelland, 55, of Seattle has been active in marathoning in recent years and finished with a time of 4:07:44.

My run went poorly. Wall symptoms came early, and each mile was slower than the one before. I started out at an 8:30 pace, but by the end of the race leg cramps and associated walking reduced me to a 13:45 pace. In the last hour I concentrated on finishing under five hours and barely made it with a 4:52:54. As I ran the last lap, the 183rd time that I had run this familiar loop since 1994, I had a sense of loss knowing that I would never race on this exact course again. Then it was over.

Lenore and I thanked the race directors for the great job they do---nice people, good food, and plentiful awards. We look forward to their next race wherever it will be!!!
