COPENHAGEN, Denmark--On Monday, June 12, at the Broloppet Half-Marathon, a
first-time race record of 80,000 runners celebrated the new bridge between
Copenhagen to Malmo, Sweden. According to Peter Larsson, a Swedish
statistician, over 96,000 entered the race with over 80,000 starters.
Broloppet is also the largest half-marathon (13.1 miles) ever.
The first part of the race went through a tunnel over 4 kilometers long
(approximately 2.5 miles). The bridge, which opens for vehicular traffic on
July 1, is 7,845 meters long or nearly five miles. The race is likely to be a
one-time only event. The entry fee was 550 Swedish Kronor or 450 Danish Kroner
(about $60).
The male and female winners were Tesfaye Tola of Ethiopia and Resituta
Joseph of Tanzania in 59:51 and 1:07:59 respectively. The runners had a
tailwind on the point-to-point course. For more information on the Broloppet
