The Dipsea event described below is part of an adventurous branch of
running which is growing in popularity. American Sports Data reports that 6.2
Americans identified themselves as trail runners in 1999. This figure is 18.7%
higher than the previous year which was the first time the activity was
included in the ASD survey. A typical trail runner is 28.7 years old and has a
household income of $63,200. Approximately 56.6% are male and 43.4% are women
which is similar to the larger population of 34 million runner/joggers (55.1%
male, 44.9% female). [source: "The Superstudy of Sports
