Would you like to join the RRCA in supporting up-and-coming American
Distance Runners? We need your assistance with our Roads Scholars fundraising
drive. Hopefully, you will not only contribute to a good cause, but will
forward this email to interested friends who might also contribute. In that
way we can be cost effective in reaching thousands of potential donors at no
cost to the RRCA.
BACKGROUND
Since 1995 the Road Runners Club of America has awarded $96,000 in RRCA
Road ScholarR grants to 24 post-collegiate runners. Chosen on the basis of
need, ability, and a commitment to race on the roads, these emerging elite
runners have benefitted from the RRCA membership's commitment to assist
American runners in training and competition with the world's best. The RRCA
grants - $4,000 per year to each runner - are intended to assist top American
post-collegiate runners who, while struggling financially, show great promise
to develop into accomplished national and world class athletes.
Just this month, six new recipients were announced, the most ever in one
year. Over the past several years the Roads Scholar grants have been helpful
to runners like Deena Drossin, Kristin Ihle-Helledy, Pete Julian, Julia
Kirtland, Scott Larsen, Kim Pawelek and many others, but we need to do so much
more. We want to help scores of other athletes who need it and possibly expand
the program to include health insurance and physiological testing.
Do these grants make a difference?
"The RRCA's Roads Scholar program enabled me to train the way I've
always wanted to do it." said Kristin Ihle: "With the RRCA's Roads
Scholar funds I can choose a race for athletic development rather than because
I need to pay the rent. It also means a lot to know that the RRCA believes in
me."
We need the help of more clubs, corporations and individuals. This
inaugural email appeal is designed to raise funds so we can expand the
program. I hope you will help by personally contributing and encouraging your
club or company to do so.
Thanks in advance for your support of developing U.S. distance runners, and
for passing this email on to others who might do the same.
Checks should be made out to RRCA and sent
