The fifth running of the Spokane Marathon was held on Sunday, October 15, 2000,
in nearly ideal weather conditions. At the 8:30 a.m. start in downtown Spokane,
the temperature was in the 40's. As the race progressed, it rose into the 50's
under overcast skies.
I was pleased with conditions because I had never run a sub-four hour time on
this hilly course at 2,000' elevation. This was my objective for the day. The
first two years I ran in a time of 4:06, while in the last two I slipped to 4:17
each time. I really wanted to run a sub-four marathon on this course and worked
at it.
I felt fine throughout and was able to run a 9 minute pace on the flats. I
reached 10K at 55:00 and the half marathon mark in 1:56:53 which were marginal
times for my goal. At 20 miles I was at 2:59:46. If I ran the last 10K in an
hour, I would just make it. However, Doomsday Hill was up ahead. If you have
run Bloomsday, you know this hill. I walked/ran the hill to the 22 mile marker.
My watch read 3:19:24 after a 10:30 hill climb. With 40 minutes to run 4.2
miles, I pressed and reached the finish line in 3:58:13.
I was overjoyed, to say the least, and basked in the well wishes from Lenore and
friends waiting in the finish area. I was the oldest runner in the race (first
in the 70+ division) and 51st of the 96 finishers.
Listed below are the race results for the top men and women.....and also the

Congratulations to Jeff Reagan for completing his first marathon in 4:26:48. We
visited in the early miles. He looked good and was enjoying his run.
As the only wheelchair participant, Jerry Martin, 52, of Spokane was the winner
in his division....finishing the marathon in a little over two and a half hours.
Our friend John Parrott, 68, of Spokane came in first in the 65-69M division in
the half marathon with a time of 1:48:40.
Congratulations to Gretchen and Aaron Eickmeyer of Yakima for their brisk
walking accomplishments. They walked the half marathon in 2:53:34 and 2:53:41
(13:15.) Only two weeks earlier Gretchen had walked the Portland Marathon in
5:49:09 (13:20.) In conjunction with her YMCA position, Gretchen is training
marathon walkers. Hopefully, some of her students will be proficient enough to
walk the inaugural YAKIMA RIVER CANYON MARATHON on March 31, 2001 (Bob and
Lenore Dolphin, Co-Directors.)
Thanks to Jom Susemihl, race director, the Bloomsday Road Runners Club, and the
many volunteers who put on the Festival of Running (marathon, half marathon, and
five mile races.)
