CINCINNATI, OH - (December 14, 2000) - The 3rd Annual Cincinnati Flying Pig
Marathon course has been finalized and certified, with changes from the
previous year's course. After two successful marathons in Cincinnati, the
course was evaluated and revised to better service the communities that the
marathon travels through, as well as ensure a safe and challenging race for
the runners.
"The changes to the course offer runners the same challenging course we have
had for the last two years, but adds more of Cincinnati's historical
neighborhood flavor for both the runners and onlookers to enjoy," noted Rich
Williams, Race Director. "The newly revised course also has less traffic
challenges for communities and more locations perfect for families, friends
and the public to cheer on both the local and out-of-town participants."
The 26.2-mile course starts in downtown Cincinnati on 7th Street, between Elm
Street and Race Street. Runners will travel through Downtown Cincinnati and
then up to Mount Adams and Eden Park, challenging participants with the hill
culminating at the Overlook near the 10K mark (6.2 miles), typically jammed
with crowds of people encouraging all of the runners. Next, runners travel
through Hyde Park before heading to Mt. Lookout Square, a new section of the
course, offering a great location for onlookers to greet the runners as they
pass the 11.5 mile mark. The marathon then follows last year's course on
Eastern Avenue, heading west into Downtown. The course will proceed north on
Central Parkway to Marshall Avenue, where it will turn west to Spring Grove
and the historic West End neighborhood. Marathoners will run south, below
Union Terminal, before heading into Queensgate. The course then travels over
the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge to Covington and into Newport, Kentucky, before
returning to Cincinnati on the Taylor Southgate Bridge for the finish at
Yeatman's Cove.
Wheelchair participants will start the race at 6:25 a.m. and runners at 6:30
a.m. Runners will reach the halfway point at mile 13.1 between 7:08 a.m. and
9:22 a.m., with average finishes occurring between 8:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
The course will remain open for a six-hour marathon or a runner with a 13:45
minute per mile pace. Participants must be at the halfway mark at the 13.1
mile mark by 9:30 a.m., 20-mile mark by 11:30 a.m. and to the Finish Line by
2:00 p.m., when it will close for timing and finisher medals. For safety
reasons, all participants must reach the 16-mile mark by 11:00 a.m. to
continue with the race beyond that point. Participants who reach this
location after 11:00 a.m. will not be able to proceed with their race.
"With the route traveling through some of Cincinnati's established
neighborhoods, the marathon moving off of Mother's Day, and early
registration numbers already beating last year's, we are anticipating a
larger field of runners with an even bigger crowd along the route," commented
Executive Director Kelly Weissmann.
