  • State of the Sport Part I: U.S. Running Population by State

    courtesy of Running USA wire

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - (August 1, 2001) - Several of the upcoming Running USA wires will feature sections of the annual "State of the Sport Report" prepared by the USATF Road Running Information Center. Much of the general running population figures have been obtained from American Sports Data, Inc (ASD). Other material comes from the databases compiled by the USATF RRIC as noted. All material is copyrighted.

According to the ASD 2001 Superstudy of Sports Participation, the number of U.S. Runners/Joggers (total U.S. population 6 years+) who ran one or more days in 2000 totaled 33,680,000. The percent of women runners in 2000 continued to increase and approach the male numbers with 47.2% compared to 44.9% in 1999. Those athletes who ran or jogged 100 or more days in 2000 (defined as "Frequent Runners" by ASD) were estimated at 9,801,000. A large number of runners continue to be in a high income group with an estimated 11,667,000 of them earning more than $75,000 a year.

The following lists provide a look at the running population state by state. The ASD figures for the Top 10 States (for overall running numbers and per capita running numbers) show that, as predicted, the heavily populated states like California, New York and Texas have the most runners. But there are also states like Vermont, Utah, Alabama, Minnesota and New Mexico that can claim that running is very popular even though the totals may be much less. For example, in Vermont 29.1% of the total population runs or jogs compared to 14% of California and New York and 15.2% of Texas.

The USATF RRIC provides additional data from running events which helps to
measure running interest state by state. The following three lists include
the most competitive running states (as illustrated by the total number of
nationally ranked times compiled from 1998 to 2000), the states with the
most events received in 2000 and finally the states with the most recorded
    race finishers in 2000.

By examining all five charts it is clear that some states such as Minnesota, Oklahoma and New Hampshire have more nationally ranked performances than one would predict by population or even running interest alone. The RRIC would like to thank the organizations (like CARA/Illinois USATF, New York Road Runners Inc), active state record keepers (like George Banker-DC, Jack Moran-MN, Joe McDaniel-OK and Bill Marable-SC) and timing companies (like Granite State Race Services, Burns Computer, Race Central) which provide complete results in a usable format.

The "new" Running USA web site features all usable results received by the RRIC. State by state rankings will also be posted in the near future. Information on sending race results to the RRIC is posted at the runningusa.org web site in the results section.

The Part II report to be released next week will examine the trends in sex and age group participation - both for fitness runners and road race participants.

More information can be obtained from the Americansportsdata.com and runningusa.org web sites.
