Army Ten-Miler Cancelled
WASHINGTON, DC - (October 8, 2001) - The October 14, 2001, Army Ten-Miler
race is cancelled. "While a specific threat to Washington, DC has not
been identified, the United States is at increased state of war and the
security of our runners, volunteers, and spectators is our primary
concern," according to Jim Vandak, Director of the Army Ten-Miler. At
this time, there are no plans to reschedule the 2001 Army Ten-Miler according
to Vandak.
"We hope that all our runners will understand our support of Operation
Enduring Freedom, our heightened awareness of the current situation, and our
concern for the security of everyone associated with the race," remarked
Vandak. "This move also allows the U.S. Army Military District of
Washington to concentrate its soldiers and resources on supporting Operation
Enduring Freedom."
All events associated with Army Ten-Miler are cancelled including the Race
Expo, Pasta Dinner, Junior Ten-Miler, and the AUSA annual meeting.

Marine Corps Marathon Set to Go as Scheduled on October
28 Runners should expect heightened security
WASHINGTON, DC - (October 9, 2001) - Despite the cancellation of the Army
Ten-Miler, the Marine Corps Marathon continues to plan for race day as
scheduled on October 28; however, runners should expect heightened security at
the Runner's Expo (Hyatt Regency Hotel), the race site and the streets
surrounding the race course. Marines, marathon race officials and six police
jurisdictions collaborated on increased security measures for runners,
spectators and volunteers participating in the 26th Marine Corps Marathon.
According to race officials, runners will encounter major changes at the
baggage tent, the Pentagon Parking lot and the start area on race day. Runners
will notice an increased presence of Marines at the start, finish and along
the course at key spectator points.
"In past, runners have been allowed to be dropped off near the start
line or roads adjacent to the Marine Corps Memorial," Race Director, Rick
Nealis said. "This year, absolutely no unauthorized vehicles will be
permitted on the course or near the starting area."
The clear bags inserted in the runner's package will be the ONLY bag
accepted in the baggage tent on race day. Runners will receive their clear bag
during packet-pickup at the Runner's Expo. Race officials also insist that
only runners wearing their bib number will be granted access in the baggage
tent on race day.
Pentagon police say every car entering the Pentagon parking lot will be
searched and only the clear bags will be allowed on the shuttle buses. Runners
should expect delays driving into the parking lot, and are encouraged to take
Metrorail on race morning. Runners taking Metrorail should get off at either
Arlington Cemetery or the Rosslyn station.
Runners and spectators should be at ease on race day. "This is what
Marines are trained to do, we have taken every precaution in order to ensure
our runners and spectators maximum safety and security on and off the
course" Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Chief of Staff, Col. D. L. Wright
said.
On October 28, 2001, the Marines and marathon staff look forward to
showcasing a safe and memorable race to all their patriotic runners and
spectators. For more information, visit the race website:

RISING YOUNG TANZANIAN STAR TAKES ON KENYAN CONTINGENT AT
ARTURO BARRIOS INVITATIONAL
CHULA VISTA, Calif. - (October 9, 2001) - The 2001 Arturo Barrios
Invitational shows indications of being an exciting year, as some of the
world's best come to Chula Vista on October 14 to test the course record and
compete for the largest 10K prize purse on the west coast. The men's course
record has stood since 1994, although the 10K race has taken on a talented
cast in recent years who have challenged the 27:59 mark.
This year the race favorite role goes to Kenyan David Chelule who took
second by just one second in the 1999 Arturo Barrios 10K, but is coming off an
impressive win at the Ro-Jack's 5 Miler in Attleboro, Mass. Losing the 1999
Arturo Barrios race by less than a body-width (in the closest men's finish
ever), David has unfinished business in Chula Vista.
The darkhorse in the men's competition has to be Tanzania's John Yuda. At
age 22, Yuda is still very much on the rise. But his credentials are already
quite impressive. In 2001 he has run the second fastest 25K (15.5 miles) in
the world, while winning the Orange Classic 10k in Middletown, New York by a
whopping 38 seconds. His aggressive front-running tactics will put his
opponents on notice that the end of 2001 is only the beginning for him. Yuda
has all the talent, but this will be his first race in Southern California.
Will he be able to stand the heat?
Two men will contest a race-within-a-race at this year's Invitational.
Kenya's John Kagwe and Ronald Mogaka will be running the November 4th New York
City Marathon. The Arturo Barrios 10K will be their final test before the
showdown in New York. See which one does best in Chula Vista, and consider him
to be among the favorites to take a bite out of the Big Apple in three weeks.
Already this year, Kagwe, the 1997 and '98 New York City champion, has
returned to top form with his June victory at the Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll
Marathon in San Diego. His training partner, Ronald Mogaka, has shown his
recent form by winning the Philadelphia Distance Half Marathon run on
September 16th, and finishing second to David Chelule at the Ro-Jack's 5
Miler.
A late addition to the men's field may have a considerable impact on the
outcome of the race. South Africa's Shadrack Hoff has announced that he will
run the 2001 event. Hoff's accomplishments include a remarkable win at the
inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA over Labor Day.
Just one week later, Hoff returned home and took second in the South African
National 10K Championship in 28:51 (altitude), losing by just one second to
Hendrick Ramaala.
Four-time Arturo Barrios Invitational champion and course record holder
Phillimon Hanneck returns to Chula Vista, the site of his greatest U.S.
running success. His Arturo Barrios 10K wins from 1992 to 1995 marked him as
one of the mid-'90's great road champions.
Americans Nick Rogers of Oregon and Colorado's Clint Wells will take on
this top-notch field hoping to further hone their international credentials.
The athletes will be vying for a purse of $59,000 with a first place check
of $4,000. A bonus of $10,000 will be awarded to any athlete besting the 10K
world record of 27:20 set by Kenya's Joseph Kimani in 1996. A $5,000 bonus
goes to the American who can surpass Mark Nenow's 27:48 American record set in
1985. Another $2000 will go to the man who takes down Phillimon Hanneck's
27:59 course mark.
Supporters of the event include the City of Chula Vista, The Port of San
Diego, Fila, QUALCOMM, UPS, Ford, The Sports Authority, Duke Energy North
America, Otay Ranch, Eastlake, Mobil, BF Goodrich, San Diego Landfill Systems,
Highland, Stone & Youngberg, Ultima Replenisher, Aunt Emma's Pancake
Restaurant, Coors, Pacific Waste Services, Active.com, SouthWest Car Rental,
Coors Amphitheatre, PennySaver, The San Diego Union Tribune's Enlace, Star
News, XEWT 12, Z90, Radio Latina and Radio Unica.
Entry forms for the Arturo Barrios Invitational are available online at
www.eliteracing.com. Entry fees are $21 ($15 for kids 12 & under). For
