    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FLINT, Mich. - (August 27, 2005) - Tanzanian Fabiano Joseph and Russian Alevtina Ivanova won titles Saturday morning at the 29th Crim 10 Mile in 47 minutes, 46 seconds and 53:34 respectively. Joseph and Ivanova each won a $5000 share of the Crim's $42,550 prize purse.

Under cloudy skies and a temperature of 70 degrees with 90% humidity, Joseph, 19, who was running his first Crim, moved into the lead at the five mile mark.

"It was fun to run with some of the runners I train with. At five miles, I just took off," said Joseph, the 2004 World Half-Marathon Championships runner-up. "The course was very tough, but I had a good race."

For the first two miles, a large pack of 30 fronted the race. By the three mile mark, the lead group was down to 15 runners. Eleven runners carried the pace into the Bradley Street hills before Joseph made his surge.

At the six mile mark, Joseph had a five second lead, and stretched his lead to nine seconds by eight miles. The teenage phenom finished strongly and unchallenged as he hit the red bricks and sprinted under the arches in downtown Flint to the finish line.

Last year's Crim champion, Kenyan Linus Maiyo finished a solid second in 47:57 with countryman Julius Kibet Koskei third in 48:13.

For the elite women, Ivanova, 30, running in her second Crim (8th in 2003), waited until the seven mile mark to pull away from the field and cruised to a one minute, seven second victory over Romania's Luminita Talpos who ran 54:41. Kenyan Grace Momanyi, 23, finished third in 55:12.

"Early in the race, I kept my pace and after six miles, I knew I could catch the leader if I just ran faster and faster. It was a bit humid, but it was cool. It was a very good race, but it was a little hard to keep pace," commented Ivanova post-race.

Among the Masters (40 and older) runners, Paul Aufdemberge, 40, of Redford, Mich., was the class of the men's field as his 52:21 - worth $1200 - topped the second male master, David Watkins, 44, of Birmingham, Mich., by over six minutes.

With a time of 57:51, Russian Ramilia Burangulova, 44, first female master in 2003, won the women's Masters title and finished 10th overall. Seven-time Crim masters champion Tatiana Pozdnyakova, 50, from Ukraine finished second in 58:13, 11th overall.

Boaz Cheboiywo (KEN), 25, of Ypsilanti was the top Michigan resident male runner (49:39) and 12th overall, while Betsy Frens, 30, Kalamazoo, with a time of 58:16, was the top female Michigander and 12th overall. Both took home $800.

The premier 10 mile race, one of the most popular road races in the nation, had over 7,200 participants. In addition, the family of races, which also includes a 8K run and walk, a 5K run and walk, a one mile run and walk, the Lois Craig Invitational for Special Olympics and the Teddy Bear Trot drew over 13,700 participants. Once again, over 3,500 volunteers came together to make this event a success.
