by Michael Selman It has been said that runners have their best thoughts of the day while out running. Runner and writer Michael Selman shares his "Thoughts on Running" with us here at ontherunevents.com.
The initial investment of getting out of bed an hour earlier than you otherwise would, pays hearty dividends soon after, and exponentially throughout the day. A decision to embark into the darkness is never regretted, once done. In the pre dawn of early morning, you can run down the middle of the street, instead of hugging the curb. The road belongs to you. In the pre dawn of early morning, you can look up in the sky, find the North Star, and always know in what direction you are headed. It's always a comfort to know where you are going. In the pre dawn of early morning, you have ample time to plan and organize your day, It's a lot more relaxing than trying to untangle it once the day is through. In the pre dawn of morning, deer and foxes are dodging you. I prefer that to dodging the dogs of daylight. Once the run is done, the day has already been productive. As I shower, it's still only 6:30, and I think of the old Army recruiting ads. I've already done more before dawn than many people will do all day. As I reflect back on the cooler 70's of the morning run, I smile as the mercury hits the mid 90's later in the day. There is no concern about squeezing in a run later in the day. The evening is free for other obligations, commitments, and activities. I have ridden the high of the morning run all day, and the sleep comes easier at night. And tomorrow, I get to do it all over again. Come on, all you AM runner wannabes. Now is the time. Try it. You'll like it. After a short time, it becomes habit. A bit later, it is routine. Finally, it becomes tradition. See you in the AM.
