The second race of the series started and finished at the Yakima Athletic Club in west Yakima. The weather was clear, with a temperature of 44 degrees, but the cold wind caused a wind chill factor of about 20 degrees. The sun shined on 89 starters as they ran through the residential streets which had compact snow & ice in places on the course. This caused some poor traction and a couple spills for the runners. Jeremy Rice finished strong to complete the course in a time of 18:33 (5:27 pace). Following were Mark Currell, Norm Buckley, Ian Brown and Jared Christianson. Leading the women’s division Sara Sunborg to post a time of 21:06. The next four women finishers were Alicen Maier, Lisa Goulet, Meridith Crane and Cary Steinman.
The second race is very interesting as several of our previous runners that have been away to colleges are home for Christmas break. Some very excellent competition ensues from them.
My compliments and appreciation to all of the volunteers. These are the individuals that set up the course, do registration, run the clock and time machines at the finish line, are at strategic places for directions on the course, tabulate the results of the finishers and keep the munchies & beverages flowing at the finish. Kudos to Don Norman, Terry Cliett, Charles Nelson, Shawn Nelson, Mike Pratt, Larry Liebert, Carol Stuhley, Frank Purdy, Jean Zahn, & Pat Miller.
On behalf of myself and all of the runners and volunteers, a special “Thank You” to Mr. Mike Pratt and the Yakima Athletic Club for hosting the second race of the series.
The third race of the five race series will start and finish at East Valley Intermediate School. The five mile race on county roads will start at 1:00 P.M..
