HCR’s Club Winter Race Series: Race #2
December 16, 2001 - Sunday
Yakima Athletic Club
3.4 Miles

Officially winter does not start for another 5 days, but the second of the five race series was held under partly cloudy skies, a temperature of 40 degrees, a strong gusty wind producing a chill factor to make it feel like 30 degrees; it sure felt like winter. A few Santa Claus caps were among the 102 hardy runners and the two dogs which finished the course hosted by the Yakima Athletic Club. The course is semi technical as it is run through the residential area of southwest Yakima.

Mark Currell won the second race of the series, but he had to work a little extra as he overran the last turn to the finish line by 20 meters and had to retrace his steps. Gerald McCormich made up some of the gap but Mark finished with a 7 second victory. Tom StClair was right behind Gerald by 4 seconds with Rick Becker finishing 5th.

In the women’s division, a real race developed at the finish as Molly Cammody edged out Angela Talarico by one second and Carol Stuhley was on their heels. Donna Nettleship and Amber Green rounded out the top five.

A big “Thank You” to Mr. Mike Pratt and the Yakima Athletic Club’s facilities for hosting the race. Volunteers: Bill Nicholson, Donna Nettleship, Lenore Dolphin, Frank Purdy, Mike Pratt, Dick Bergstrom and Jean Zahn.

Next race: revised site. It will NOT be at the East Valley Intermediate School. It will start and finish at the east Valley Mall Blvd parking lot located at the south end of the Greenway pathway.
